17th Annual Joe Cronin Memorial Fishing Tournament - Jimmy Fund Benefit

Friday, August 06, 2010

Organizers of the Joe Cronin Memorial Fishing Tournament to benefit the Jimmy Fund have announced that this year's tournament will be held on Friday, August 6, with a private dinner for boat captains the evening prior. Held at Nauticus Marina in Osterville, the event includes dinners, raw bars, live entertainment, children's activities, fabulous auction items, awards, and of course, fishing. Now in its 17th year, the tournament has become one of the largest private, one-day fundraisers for the Jimmy Fund, which supports adult and pediatric cancer care and research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The rapidly growing event has raised $2.85 million over the years and expects to reach the $3 million mark this year.

The inaugural tournament in 1994 included eight boats and raised $5,000. Last year's event hosted four hundred anglers and fifty-five boats, raising more than $300,000. Countless local and regional companies support the tournament, including The Bank of New York Mellon, which has been the presenting sponsor for 13 years, donating $355,000 to date. The 2010 tournament gets underway at 8 a.m. on Friday, August 6, with a spectacular parade of boats as they depart the Oyster Harbor Marine, Nauticus Marina and Crosby Yacht Yard. Fishing continues until 1:30 p.m., followed by the official weigh in from 1-4 p.m. From 12-3 p.m., there are also ample activities for children including fireboat tours, face painting, a cookout and a NASCAR Race Car on view.

The evening festivities begin at 4 p.m. and include a raw bar, chowder, cocktails, live music, a sit-down dinner, live and silent auctions, and an awards presentation. Jordan Leandre, a nine-year-old patient at Dana-Farber, will once again perform a moving rendition of God Bless America. The Barnstable Police Department Color Guard and Bag Pipes will also perform.

About Joe Cronin:

The namesake of the tournament, Joe Cronin, was not only a player and manager for the Boston Red Sox, but was also a Commissioner of the American League. Along with his teammate Ted Williams and Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey, they initiated and fostered a strong partnership with the Jimmy Fund that continues today. Cronin died in 1984 at age 77 in Osterville, and is buried in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Centerville. His jersey, number 4, was retired by the Red Sox on May 29, 1984.
