The Taj Hotel was recently all aglitter as the ever-young Marilyn Riseman celebrated her 80th birthday amidst family, friends and admirers galore.

The noted fashion maven’s festive soiree, which included a sushi buffet and fashion show, was hosted by none other than The Taj’s general manager David Gibbons.

Among the glamorous guests were Boston’s First Lady of Fashion, Yolanda Cellucci, with her lovely daughter, model Linda Cole; Channel 7 news anchor Frances Rivera; novelist Robert Parker and his wife, Joan; The State Room’s handsome Michael Neagle; model Hollis Colby; and makeup artist David Nicholas, just to name a very few.

Best Wishes, Marilyn!

Marian Christy is Busier Than Ever

Noted journalist Marian Christy joined The Boston Globe as its fashion editor in 1965 after a distinguished career at Women’s Wear Daily. We still remember how much we enjoyed reading her prize-winning features, which often covered the major couture salons in Paris, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Athens, Dublin and London.

Marian later switched to celebrity journalism in 1981 with her original “Conversations” column format. This summer we greatly enjoyed her blockbuster book “Letters from Legends,” in which she describes her recollections surrounding many of the interviews she conducted over the years before her retirement from The Globe. As the book name suggests, the letters she received from her interview subjects are fascinating indeed. In fact, many of the letters and notes are photographed in their entirety.

Among the famous celebrities are: Richard Avedon, Candice Bergen, Bill Blass, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Joan Crawford, Barbara Walters, Paloma Picasso, Gloria Vanderbilt, Lauren Bacall, Ann Landers, Estee Lauder, Julia Child, Lana Turner, Princess Grace and Queen Elizabeth II, just to name a very few.

We have recently received a notice from New River Press that Marian’s latest book, “Disclosures: Ten Famous Men Revealed,” is scheduled for release within the next few weeks. Featured will be: Sylvester Stallone, Anthony Quinn, Lord Snowdon, Roger Clemens, James Earl Jones, Truman Capote, Ralph Lauren, Norman Vincent Peale, Stephen Hawking, and Billy Crystal—with an “afterword” about Salvador Dali. We can’t wait to read it!

The multi-talented Marian, not one to slow down in her retirement, is working harder than ever at one of her first loves—that of artist extraordinaire. Her art resume is impressive.

We will all have the opportunity to see Marian at work when she participates in the Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s upcoming “Plein Air” art event on Thursday and Friday, September 20 and 21 at the Society’s Elm Bank gardens in Wellesley. The public is invited to watch the artists at work during the two-day painting period as they turn their canvases into masterpieces before our very eyes.

The art will be on display and open to the public from October 18 – October 20.

A “Gala Art Auction!” will be held on Saturday evening, October 20, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. For ticket information for the Gala and complete details about the event, including the names of all the participating artists, visit To see images of some of Marian’s art work, be sure to visit
