People, Places & Plants Magazine Celebrates 10th Anniversary - Lists Most Influential Gardeners
By Hilda M. Morrill

To commemorate its Special Collector's 10th Anniversary 50th Edition, the gardening magazine People, Places & Plants has published the first-ever list of its kind to honor regional gardeners, the 50 Most Influential Gardeners, in the Northeast.

Including people from the six New England states and New York, the poll is broken into five categories: Hobby, Professional, Non-Profit, Business and Education. According to the magazine, which was launched in Maine in 1995, the nomination process took more than a year and considered thousands of individuals. Several noted individuals from Massachusetts were ultimately selected.

"This is one of the most ambitious projects we've ever undertaken and we're proud of the list," said publisher Paul Tukey.

Among the honorees from Massachusetts are: Dave Barnett of Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Pat Becket of the Living Lawn in Marblehead, nursery owner Pat Bigelow of Northborough, Patrick Chasse of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Bill Cullina of Garden in the Woods in Framingham, Peter Del Tredici of the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain, Polly Hill of the Polly Hill Arboretum on Martha's Vineyard, Hobby gardener Catherine Hull of Manchester, and Carol Johnson of Carol R. Johnson and Associates in Cambridge.

Also: Landscape designer Gary Koller of Brookline, garden center founder Paul Mahoney of Winchester, garden center owner Wayne Mezitt of Hopkinton, radio host Paul Rogers of Worcester, Boston Globe gardening writer Carol Stocker of Milton, TV host Roger Swain of Horticulture magazine in Boston, John Trexler of Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, landscape architect Tom Wirth of Sherborn, and Virginia Wood of the New England Nursery Association in Natick.

In this edition of the magazine, which looks back across the past ten years of publishing, People, Places & Plants profiles the ten best perennial and shrub introductions of the past decade, along with eight low-maintenance roses. Editors also picked out ten top pointers and eight plants "We Can Learn to Hate."

The current edition also includes the annual Directory of Garden Tours, with 185 listed from May through July; and the Garden Center Directory lists 540 independently owned businesses, with descriptions and contact information.
